Receive This Moment
Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn't more complicated than that. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it.
Joseph Goldstein co-founded the Insight Meditation Society in 1975 and has spent decades teaching Vipassana, the Buddhist practice of insight meditation. This passage comes from his 2013 book, written as a plain, modern guide stripped of jargon for Western students new to the practice. Here he strips mindfulness down to its essence: not a special state to chase but a simple willingness to meet whatever is happening, pleasant or unpleasant, without pushing it away or grabbing for more. In the Eastern wisdom traditions, this quality of attention gets cultivated through ordinary acts — eating, walking, washing a cup — done with the mind fully where the body already is. The practice is not somewhere else waiting to begin; it is this breath, this task, met exactly as it comes.
Reflection
Goldstein calls mindfulness the simple, balanced acceptance of whatever is already here. What is one task today I can give my full attention without multitasking?
