The Happiest of Minds

Poetry is a record of the best and happiest moments of the happiest and best minds.

Shelley wrote this essay in 1821 while living in exile in Italy, responding to his friend Thomas Love Peacock's claim that poetry was becoming useless in a modern, rational age. Far from home and often broke, Shelley argued that poetry exists to catch and hold the fleeting flashes of joy and insight that visit the mind unbidden. He described these moments as elevating and delightful beyond expression, gone as quickly as they arrive. The essay was published only after his death in a drowning accident the following year, which makes his urgency to notice joy while it lasts feel even sharper today.

Reflection

Shelley believed poetry captures the mind's most joyful and elevated moments before they pass. What moment today am I already looking forward to?
