Go Alone In Silence
Only by going alone in silence, without baggage, can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.
John Muir wrote this in the summer of 1869, while working as a shepherd's helper in the Sierra Nevada, his days filled with a bleating flock and a talkative camp companion. Whenever his duties allowed, he slipped away alone into the high meadows and peaks, and it was in those solitary hours, away from talk and clatter, that the mountains seemed to open themselves to him. He kept this discipline in the journal that became My First Summer in the Sierra, treating silence not as emptiness but as the condition listening requires. The same holds true off the mountain: real attention rarely survives a crowd or a noisy morning.
Reflection
Muir believed real wilderness opened up only in solitude and silence. What can I put aside today to sit in quiet for a moment?
