Morning Meditation

May 28, 2026

Glance at the sun. See the moon and the stars. Gaze at the beauty of earth's greenings. Now, think.

— Hildegard of Bingen, Meditations

Hildegard wrote this in 12th-century Germany, running a monastery, corresponding with popes and emperors, and managing the daily, grinding work of institutional life. She was not living in retreat from difficulty. She was asking people who were tired and overwhelmed to stop and actually look at what was in front of them. The instruction to think at the end is the real move — gratitude here is not a feeling that arrives on its own, it is something you do on purpose.

Reflection

Hildegard believed attention was a spiritual discipline, not a passive experience. What is one specific thing you saw this morning that you did not stop to notice?
