In love, nothing exists between heart and heart. Speech is born out of longing, true description from the real taste of a thing.

Rabia was an eighth-century mystic from Basra who had been enslaved as a child and later became one of the most respected spiritual teachers in the Islamic world. She lived simply, refused marriage, and turned away disciples who came for status rather than sincerity. This line appears in accounts of her later years, when she was known for long stretches of silent prayer, and it makes a direct claim: words only earn their keep when they come from actual experience, not from habit or performance. That distinction matters now because most of us are surrounded by constant talking, including our own internal monologue, and Rabia is pointing to the difference between speaking from knowledge and speaking from noise.

Reflection

Think about a specific conversation you had recently. Did you speak from something you actually knew, or did you fill the silence because it felt uncomfortable?
