Too Late I Loved You

Too late have I loved Thee, O Fairness, so ancient, and so new! too late have I loved Thee! And behold, Thou wert within, and I abroad, and there I searched for Thee; deformed I, plunging amid those fair forms, which Thou hadst made.

Augustine wrote these words as Bishop of Hippo, looking back across decades at the young man who chased ambition, pleasure, and philosophy before his conversion at thirty-two. In this passage from Book X he confesses that he spent years hunting for beauty and meaning in the created world, not realizing the source of that beauty was already present within him. The line captures the ache of a man who finally sees that his restless searching had been aimed outward when the answer was always closer than that. It speaks to anyone today who assumes meaning must be found somewhere else, in some future achievement, rather than recognized in what is already here.

Reflection

Augustine confessed that he searched for meaning in created things when its source had been within him all along. What is one place today where I can look inward instead of outward for meaning?
