Trust What You Cannot Grasp

By love he may be gotten and holden; but by thought never.

This line comes from an anonymous English monk writing around 1370, likely a Carthusian, who addressed the work as private counsel to a young disciple eager to grow in contemplative prayer. He warns his student that God cannot be captured by the intellect's usual methods of analysis and reasoning, only approached through the surrender of love. Writing in a monastery devoted to silence and solitude, he understood how easily the mind's striving becomes its own obstacle. His counsel still speaks to anyone who tries to think their way into peace instead of trusting it.

Reflection

The unknown author insisted that love reaches what thought alone cannot reach. What can I trust today without needing to fully understand it?
