Learn to be silent. Let your quiet mind listen and absorb.

Plutarch includes this instruction in his collection of moral essays as part of a broader discussion about the discipline required before one can speak wisely in public life. The Pythagorean schools of ancient Greece actually required new students to remain silent for years before they were permitted to ask questions or offer opinions. Plutarch found this practice worth preserving because he believed most people speak before they have genuinely heard anything. The instruction cuts against a persistent human habit: treating conversation as a performance rather than an exchange.

Reflection

Think about a specific conversation you had this week. Did you listen to understand the other person, or did you listen while planning your response?
