Let The Truth Defend You

I feel safe in the midst of my enemies, for the truth is all powerful and will prevail

Sojourner Truth, Address to the American Equal Rights Association, 1867

Sojourner Truth spoke these words in 1867 at a convention of the American Equal Rights Association, where she stood before a crowd that included people hostile to both her race and her sex. Born into slavery and freed only years before, she had every reason to carry rage into that room, yet she chose to say she felt safe rather than afraid. Her safety did not come from winning every argument or being believed by everyone present, but from releasing her grip on the fight itself and trusting that truth would do its own work over time. That kind of release, letting go of the need to defeat or convert an opponent, is at the heart of forgiveness.

Reflection

Sojourner Truth chose to trust truth rather than carry fear toward her enemies. What is one grudge I can set down before this day begins?
