What Appears After Doubt

The courage to be is rooted in the God who appears when God has disappeared in the anxiety of doubt.

Tillich wrote this closing line in 1952, in a book addressing an age gripped by meaninglessness after two world wars and the early Cold War. He was not offering comfort through certainty but through its opposite: he argued that when the old, familiar God of easy belief collapses under honest doubt, something deeper and more real can take its place. This is a book about starting over after the ground you stood on gives way, not by finding new ground elsewhere but by standing firm in the very place where the old ground disappeared. It speaks to beginning again because it insists the collapse of certainty is not the end of the story but the opening of a truer one.

Reflection

Tillich believed doubt could clear away false certainty to reveal firmer ground underneath. What is one certainty I can set aside today to begin again?
