Where Freedom Begins
Freedom is not to be found in the world of objects; it begins only where that world ends.
Jaspers wrote these lectures in the years after World War II, during which he and his Jewish wife had survived Nazi Germany by the narrowest of margins, stripped of his professorship and living under constant threat of deportation. He had watched a regime try to reduce human beings to objects: a race, a number, a file. In The Way to Wisdom, drawn from radio talks meant for ordinary listeners rather than scholars, he insists that no system of facts or categories can ever fully capture a person. Freedom, for Jaspers, is not something science or the state hands you; it starts exactly where their power to define you runs out.
Reflection
Jaspers drew a line between the facts others use to define a person and the freedom no fact can touch. Where can I act today in a way that no job title fully explains?
