Depth Over Image

Soul is not a thing, but a quality or a dimension of experiencing life and ourselves. It has to do with depth, value, relatedness, heart, and personal substance.

Moore wrote this early in Care of the Soul, the 1992 book he published after leaving a religious order and spending years as a psychotherapist searching for a way to talk about inner life without heavy theology. He was responding to a culture obsessed with self-image, career branding, and quick psychological fixes, arguing that soul is something felt in ordinary depth rather than performed on the surface. The line reframes identity away from how a person appears and toward what actually has weight and value in their life. It still speaks directly to anyone building a persona for work or social media while wondering what is left underneath.

Reflection

Moore locates soul in personal substance beneath outward image. What is one thing I can do today that shows my real self instead of my image?
