Neruda wrote this poem after a friend named Maru Mori knitted him a pair of wool socks, a small gift that struck him as too beautiful for ordinary use. It became part of his Odas elementales, a project built on his belief that poetry should praise onions, tables, and socks with the same seriousness once reserved for gods and heroes. Living through years of political upheaval and exile, he turned toward these humble objects on purpose, insisting that joy did not need to be rare or grand to be real. The poem still matters because it argues that goodness multiplies when it shows up in something plain and touchable, like a warm sweater or a cup of coffee.
