The Only Solution
We have all known the long loneliness and we have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community.
Dorothy Day wrote this as the closing line of her 1952 autobiography, looking back on decades of poverty and activism after founding the Catholic Worker movement with Peter Maurin during the depths of the Great Depression. She had lived among the poor in New York's Bowery, running houses of hospitality where the hungry could eat and the homeless could sleep, often unsure where next month's rent would come from. Her steadiness did not come from certainty or comfort but from the daily discipline of showing up for others, meal after meal, guest after guest. This line names what steadied her: loneliness never fully disappears, but it becomes bearable, even transformed, inside a life shared with others.
Reflection
Dorothy Day found lasting calm through community rather than isolation. Who can I reach out to today to build that same steadiness?
